N.B. Power customers who still refuse a smart meter to be installed will be charged a new monthly fee starting Tuesday.
In March, the utility said there were an estimated 17,000 customers who were refusing the meters. Officials said that they believed they could convince half of those customers to have the new meters installed.
But on the eve of the deadline, there were still around 14,800 customers who had declined a smart meter as of Aug. 31.
Those customers will now pay the opt-out fee of $4.65 a month.
