It’s normally a busy time of year for trainer Charles Miles, with all the horse shows, fairs and races happening across New Brunswick, but this year is looking different. 

As a precautionary measure, many horse events have either been cancelled or postponed after a case of equine herpesvirus EHV-1 was reported in the southern part of the province last Tuesday.

“You’re always disappointed when you can’t race, you’re always disappointed when you can’t go to a fair,” said Miles, who keeps his harness racing horses in Fredericton.

“In this case, it’s prudent to follow what the direction of the veterinarians across the province think you should do.”

EHV-1 is a specific strain of the disease in horses that can cause respiratory and neurological disease,
