Fredericton’s new mayor says compassion shouldn’t come at the expense of accountability when it comes to helping people feel safe in the city.

Speaking Monday at the swearing-in ceremony for the city’s new mayor and council, Mayor Steve Hicks echoed his campaign pledge to improve public safety and later told reporters that law enforcement needs to be carried out against open drug use.

“We want to help people, and we do,” Hicks said. “That’s our main goal. But there’s certain actions and behaviours that there’s got to be accountability for in a community because people need to be able to go about their business.
