Work has begun on long-awaited stormwater and sewer upgrades in the Saint-Jacques community of Edmundston.

Residents have waited anxiously for the project at Léopold-Couturier Avenue and Albert Street to get underway for three years after a heavy rain event wreaked havoc in the neighbourhood.

On June 29, 2023, 100 millimetres of rain fell in two hours, overwhelming infrastructure.

In addition to road and culvert washouts, there were 309 reported cases of flooding and sewer backups.

“Very terrible,” said resident Rino Francoeur, whose basement was damaged in the rainstorm.   

“My basement was completely finished.”
