The Nutrien Civic Centre in Sussex is closing its doors this Saturday, because the regional facility has not received its budgeted support from the Kings Regional Service Commission.
McFarlane said the centre was unable to make payroll this week after receiving only a fraction of its usual quarterly operating subsidy.
The centre opened in 2012 and features a competition pool, therapy pool and fitness facilities.
“I don’t want us to close,” said McFarlane. “Closing is a breach of trust, as far as I’m concerned, for all of our members in the community.”
The centre will issue refunds where necessary, and McFarlane said she is hoping to reopen with “a plan for sustainability in place” before losing members permanently.
