While New Brunswick had a pretty quiet wildfire season in 2026 compared to last year, one spring day back in May was especially lively.

As several small wildfires broke out across the province, the small village of Rogersville, near Miramichi, saw fires break out along railroad tracks in their community on May 5.

Nouvelle-Arcadie Mayor Jimmy Bourque, whose municipality includes Rogersville, said back in May that the fires started after a train went past and this wasn’t the first time this has happened. He said residents were concerned and were demanding answers.

Now, half a year later, some answers are being released from the province.

“An investigation into the cause of [the Rogersville fire] eliminated all probable causes for the fire with the exception of rail activity,” said an email statement from Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Nick Brown.
