Residents from Sussex, surrounding areas and some from further away pressed New Brunswick government officials on the impacts of shale gas development during a public meeting Tuesday night as part of a provincial process to potentially lift its moratorium on fracking.

“How many kids need cancer for this industry to be worthwhile? Like, how much money offsets that? How many people getting asthma?” asked Beth McQuinn, who attended from the nearby Penobsquis.

“How much damage do we have to do to our environment and to our wildlife just for some money for maybe 20 years? Because I understand we’re nearing the end of the lifespan of these [projects].”
