Resurfacing work has officially started on the Confederation Bridge in the largest project on the 12.9-kilometre span since it was first opened in 1997.

Strait Crossing Bridge Ltd., the company that operates and manages the bridge, said the work is meant to improve the driving surface, prevent the need for more disruptive repairs and help it reach its 100-year projected lifespan.

Crews began on the New Brunswick side just off Cape Jourimain, in the lane directing traffic to Prince Edward Island. Once that lane is complete, crews will move to the lane coming from the island.

Traffic is reduced to one lane in the construction zone, which will move along the bridge in 3.5-kilometre increments as work continues.
