Police believe a fatal collision Monday on Route 7 happened when a southbound vehicle swerved to avoid a moose and struck a northbound vehicle head-on, the RCMP said in a news release.
The driver and only occupant of the northbound vehicle, a 31-year-old man from Beaver Dam, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.
The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. in Grand Bay-Westfield. The highway was briefly closed Monday night near the Nerepis Road exit, according to earlier social media posts from the RCMP.
Reached by phone, RCMP Sgt. Ben Comley said the collision took place near kilometre marker 76 on a stretch of the highway that does not have moose fencing.
