Duane Squires remembers a day last year when his eldest son lost a Jibbitz shoe charm off his Crocs.
Squires and his wife took their boy back to the place where he thought it had fallen off.
“We searched everywhere for it, all of us crying,” Squires, a detective constable with the Saint John Police Force, wrote in a victim impact statement submitted to the Court of King’s Bench on Thursday.
“To anyone else it may have seemed like a small piece of plastic. But to our son, it was one of the few tangible connections he still had of his friend.”
The 10-year-old friend and basketball teammate had been stabbed to death, along with his 17-year-old brother, by Roman Kamyshnyy, their father.
The basketball team had Jibbitz and stickers for their water bottles made up bearing the youngest victim’s jersey number after the two boys were killed Jan. 29, 2025 in their home.
A jury found Kamyshnyy, 46, guilty in June of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the boys, identified only as A.B. and C.D. because of a publication ban.
On Thursday, before imposing sentence, Justice Darrell Stephenson said evidence presented at the two-week trial showed Kamyshnyy murdered his children so he could hurt his ex-wife “in the most gruesome manner imaginable [over] the ending of their marriage.”
