Gunshots were exchanged between an armed person and police in downtown Moncton on Thursday morning, Codiac Regional RCMP say.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at 8:08 a.m., Cpl. Luc Picard said in an email.

When police arrived at the scene on St. George Street, an armed suspect fired shots toward them, Picard wrote.

Codiac RCMP members then fired at the suspect, who was arrested and taken to hospital “for assessment,” Picard said.

No police officers were injured, but Picard did not say if the suspect was injured.

CBC News requested clarification, but Picard reiterated that no police officers were injured and said “any further questions would be part of the ongoing investigation.”
