The Benson Seafood operation on Grand Manan was bustling with people on Friday to mark the official opening of the company’s new lobster processing plant.

The family-owned business has been in the live lobster industry for more than 50 years, buying most of its volume from Grand Manan and Charlotte County fishermen, with the remaining lobster brought in from the Atlantic region and Quebec.

But a two-year project is finally nearing completion, as the Bensons expand their operations to enter the frozen seafood market, with a new 17,000-square-foot processing plant — the first of its kind for the island.

The company will cook, clean, package and freeze lobster and other seafood products in the plant to sale around the world.
