The victim of a fatal fire on Valleyview Street was a 32-year-old-man, the Fredericton Fire Department said at a news conference on Monday.
The fire happened Friday afternoon in a first-floor apartment in the building west of the University of New Brunswick campus.
“While the investigation remains ongoing, panel preliminary findings indicate that the fire was accidental,” Fredericton fire Chief Dwayne Killingbeck said.
“To define accidental, that is a fire that occurs without design or intent.”
Killingbeck said the department received the initial 911 call from a neighbour, who was outside the building and saw smoke coming from a window.
Five fire trucks, 19 firefighters and three fire investigators went to the scene.
