One of Sussex’s most important bridges has been closed by the province, and it’s not known when, or if, it will reopen.

The Trout Creek No. 1 bridge is a part of Maple Avenue, one of the town’s central streets. The span has connected the community for 90 years, but large cracks can now be seen splintering its concrete foundation.

There is also a hole in the sidewalk that tunnels through the surface asphalt and through the concrete, exposing rebar and leading directly to the icy creek waters rushing below.

“It’s an extreme disappointment to us,” said Deputy Mayor Tim Wilson.

“We’re extremely disappointed with the province on this … the province knew that the bridge needed replacing.”
