Jo and Ian Hilditch were halfway across the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 11, 2001, when the news broke. 

As they sat on the plane travelling to New York from Birmingham, England, with other anxious passengers, they recall the cabin crew being distraught and uncertain of what to do.

“I was really anxious, and I got more and more anxious as the flight went on,” said Jo.

First their plane flew over Gander, N.L., then Halifax, but those airports were already full with other diverted flights.
