Amy Robichaud didn’t pick the trombone. It picked her.
This fall, the 19-year-old from Caraquet begins her studies at the Royal College of Music in London, England — one of the top-ranked music schools in the world.
Music found her early. Before Sistema New Brunswick’s after-school program, before the trombone, there were car rides with her mother.
“We’d go on a lot of drives, me and my mother, and we’d listen to classical music and lots of opera,” Robichaud said. “I guess that’s how I got started with music.”
In Grade 3, Sistema New Brunswick teachers came to her classroom in Moncton with an offer: free music lessons, five days a week, three hours a day. Robichaud and her younger sister signed up together.

Amy Robichaud started playing trombone through Sistema NB, a free music program, and now she’s heading to the Royal College of Music in London.
Sistema NB launched in 2009 at Beaverbrook School in Moncton, with one teacher and 50 young students learning violin, viola and cello. It has since grown to nine centres across the province and become the largest youth music program in Canada. Every student received a concert instrument, a teacher and a seat in an orchestra, all free of charge.
