When Irum Shoaib first moved her family to a new Fredericton neighbourhood last year, she thought it was quiet — even sometimes thinking to herself that the people in the community might be rude for not interacting more.

But all of that changed on Aug. 15 when her autistic son, Rohaan, went missing.

“Someone is taking care of my big kids because they were crying, you know, someone [is] like telling me, ‘Oh, it’s OK,” Shoaib recalled a little less than a week after the event, her voice shaking.
