After a few winters in a row of complaints about sidewalks and streets taking days — and sometimes weeks — to plow, Saint John has begun improving parts of its winter management strategy.
City councillors approved a multi-phased plan Monday that will start with putting more resources into clearing snow from sidewalks in the south-central peninsula, where staff say the demand is greatest.
Two factors are driving the change, public works director Tim O’Reilly told councillors.
“One is transit routes,” O’Reilly said. “People that use transit, they don’t just get on the bus. They have to get there from the sidewalk.
