Moncton council has approved more training for its community safety officers, expecting the New Brunswick government will soon grant them greater power.
Councillors voted unanimously Monday in favour of spending $80,000 for training this fall by the Atlantic Police Academy.
It will cover topics like criminal law, use of force and de-escalation.
Mayor Shawn Crossman expects the province will soon approve the city’s longstanding request to designate its community safety officers as peace officers.
The change could see the officers carrying more equipment such as handcuffs, able to detain people, and enforce provincial laws like the Mental Health Act and Trespass Act.
City staff said the exact powers and equipment are still being determined.
