After public safety dominated last spring’s municipal election, Fredericton’s new council asked the provincial government to take action.
During Monday night’s meeting, councillors endorsed three provincially funded projects for supportive and transitional housing, but their first action was to approve a statement that homelessness is a provincial responsibility.
In an interview with reporters after the meeting, Mayor Steve Hicks said he knows homelessness is a challenging file for the province.
“But we need a sense of urgency. This problem doesn’t seem to be going away. We need to get people help,” Hicks said.
“We need to make sure that our residents feel safe, our businesses feel safe, our downtown is able to operate the way it should be operating.”
