The province’s advocate for children, youth and seniors is supportive of the recently announced school cellphone ban. 

“I think government deserves a lot of credit,” said Kelly Lamrock, who has advocated for a ban.

In an interview with Information Morning, Lamrock said cellphone technology “isn’t as benign as we all hoped it was going to be in the early 2000s.”

Lamrock said it’s important to create spaces that focus on core skills of learning while limiting phone use, and there’s risk with removing basic thinking and research from the human experience.

Speaking to his experience as a part-time teacher at St. Thomas University, Lamrock said people are becoming reliant on using phones and artificial intelligence to answer basic questions instead of using reasoning.
