The escape of a Shediac jail inmate who was on the loose for more than a month could have been prevented, according to an internal review by the New Brunswick government.

On Friday, a news release from the Department of Justice and Public Safety said the review looked into what happened and how additional safeguards could be added.

After the review, the department “enhanced physical security measures” at the Southeastern Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac, but the release did not elaborate. Changes were also made to other jails in the province.
