Anglicans from across New Brunswick have rejected relinquishing ownership of Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton as a way to get $17 million in desperately needed repairs underway.
The cathedral that sits on a green between Waterloo Row and Brunswick Street is a national historic site and one of the most prominent buildings in the city.
But it’s almost 175 years old, and the Anglican diocese learned earlier this year that the building is in dire need of repairs — to the roof, stained glass and electrical system, among other things.
This news led to a meeting of more than 200 representatives of churches across New Brunswick to come up with a strategy for financing the work.
