A temporary location for a homeless shelter on the Fredericton Exhibition grounds will be ending at the end of the month.
The shelter in the Winner’s Lounge Building, run by Fredericton Homeless Shelters Inc., had been given a temporary approval by the city in December 2024. The temporary approval was extended last December, with an expiry date of April 30.
“The short answer is we ran out of runway on planning anything,” said executive director Warren Maddox. He said the non-profit has been trying to find a new, permanent location for a shelter but ran into challenges with zoning.
City spokesperson Marley McLellan said there has not been a new application to extend the temporary zoning approval again and directed questions to the province’s Department of Social Development.
