Nowhere, Small Ceremonies, Endling, Property, Black Cherokee and I Remember Lights are the six titles on the 2026 Amazon Canada First Novel Award shortlist. (CBC Books)
Authors Kate Cayley, Jon Claytor, Antonio Michael Downing, Kyle Edwards, Ben Ladouceur and Maria Reva are nominated for the 2026 Amazon Canada First Novel Award.
Established in 1976, the $60,000 award is a collaboration between Amazon Canada and The Walrus recognizing the best debut Canadian novel of the year. The remaining finalists will each receive $6,000.
Toronto-based Cayley is nominated for her novel Property, which recounts the seemingly inconsequential events of one spring day as a dinner party is planned. But by the end of the day, someone has died — a tragedy that marks the neighbourhood forever.
Cayley is also the author of the short story collections How You Were Born and Householders, three poetry collections and multiple plays.
