A wildfire continues to burn Thursday in the northeastern portion of the Base Gagetown range and training area.
Capt. Robynn Still, a public affairs officer for 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown, said in a statement there is no risk to the public, military members or civilian employees.
Still said the wildfire, which started around noon on Wednesday, is 12 hectares in size and has already burned 25 hectares.
“The wildfire was started by artillery shooting into Lawfield Impact Area,” she said. “As artillery fire is conducted under observation, the fire would have been detected very quickly after ignition.”
There have been no injuries.
In a release, base commander Erik Esselaar said “helicopter water-bucket operations” were scheduled for Thursday afternoon and fire crews continue to “implement suppression measures.”
The wildfire is located in the northeastern part of the base where there are no nearby residential buildings.
