To accommodate the extensive redevelopment and construction of the City’s waterfront, the lighthouse structure near the Trade and Convention Centre will be making its way to a new home in Grand Manan next week.
The lighthouse replica was built near the boardwalk several years ago and has most recently been used as a uniquely disguised storage area. While the structure has never operated as a functioning lighthouse and is not a historical landmark, it has been recognized by residents and visitors as a fixture within the harbour.
“We knew the waterfront development would, at some point, lead us to eventually relocate the lighthouse, or risk demolishing it altogether,” says City of Saint John Municipal Engineer Gerald Mattsson. “Of course, finding a new location was the priority and we are so pleased to see it go to our friends at the Village of Grand Manan. We have been working with them on a plan to ensure safe transportation from Saint John to the new location.”

Pour permettre l’important réaménagement et la construction du secteur riverain de la Ville, le phare situé près du Saint John Trade & Convention Centre sera déplacé à Grand Manan la semaine prochaine.
Le réplica du phare a été construit près de la passerelle il y a plusieurs années et a récemment été transformée en une aire d’entreposage déguisée unique. Bien le phare n’ait jamais été fonctionnel et qu’il ne soit pas un monument historique, il est reconnu par les résidents et les visiteurs comme étant un incontournable du port.
« Nous savions que l’aménagement du secteur riverain nous amènerait à relocaliser le phare ou à risquer de le démolir complètement », explique Gerald Mattsson, ingénieur municipal de la Ville de Saint John. « Bien sûr, la priorité était de trouver un nouvel emplacement et nous sommes très heureux de le voir envoyé à nos amis du Village de Grand Manan. Nous réfléchissons à un plan avec eux pour assurer un transport sécuritaire de Saint John au nouvel emplacement. »
