Since the municipality of Butternut Valley is only 124 days old and this is new for everyone, we thought we would begin to share some information about what this all means! This week we are proud to present:
The Top 5 ½ things you should know about Council meetings.
1. Council meetings take place on the second Thursday of the month (with no meeting in August), so it’s easy to mark on your calendar!
2. We are located in front of the Butternut Brew Coffee Shop (4561 Route 880). There weren’t many accessible rental options in Butternut Valley that had internet and space for staff and a Council room, but this spot fits us just right! Although, this is a temporary location until we find a more permanent home, one perk of being in front of a coffee shop, the coffee is always hot and the kettle is always on!
3. ALL ARE WELCOME – we only have a couple of fold-up chairs, so you can call dibs in advance or you can just show up and stand or bring your own (lawn chairs welcome)! We love drop-ins, did we mention that the kettle is always on?
4. Are there rules for the meeting? Yup, there sure is! A municipality is local government and so our own Butternut Valley procedural by-law! The Clerk is a bit of a stickler for the rules (the fun police), so she makes sure we are always sticking to it.
5. Can we talk/comment in a regular Council meeting? The public can’t participate in the meeting but don’t worry, you are represented by your Councillor! They are your representative on Council and they have to do all of the heavy lifting for you! If you have questions or concerns or just want to have a chat, reach out to them any time, there is no need to wait for a Council meeting. If you’d like to do a formal presentation or petition to Council, that’s different and you just call the Clerk in advance and she can give you a slot on the agenda!
5 ½ – Did we mention ALL ARE WELCOME – Since we already said it, we figured it only deserved a ½!
