When Wilbur and Orville Wright asked the US Weather Bureau the location of the windiest place in America, the answer they received was on the Outer Banks at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. They needed the wind to experiment with kites. It is a transcendent experience to stand here knowing that, in December 1903, this is where the first fixed-wing powered flight took place.
