The mayor of St. Stephen says first responders were faced with nine drug overdoses at once at the local homeless shelter over the weekend.

“It’s a very trying and traumatic incident for the community and for the individuals involved.” Mayor Steven Backman said in an interview with CBC Radio’s Shift.

“But more so it underscores the severity and extent of the drug situation that has kind of infested our community.”

Backman said his latest information was that three of the people who overdosed at the Lighthouse Lodge were treated and released on site and six were transported to the hospital.

“One was transported in the back of a police car because we had used up all our ambulances,” Backman said.
