Despite opposition from nearby residents, Saint John councillors gave first and second reading Monday to a proposed development that would bring 195 apartments stacked in townhouses to the lower west side.

Councillors voted unanimously to allow the project on the site of the former Hilton Belyea Arena.

Development company Canterbury Developments Ltd. applied for approval on behalf of the group leading the project, Belyea Village Ltd.

“I’m relieved,” Ali Farahani, owner of Belyea Village, told reporters after the vote.

“It’s been a year and a half we’ve been working on this. Ultimately, we can’t wait to break ground and to offer something which we feel is needed and will be a net positive for everybody involved.”
