Simon Daniel is releasing his latest single and video, “Vagues radio,” on Friday May 26, 2023. It’s the second single from the album “Sans titre (for now)” released on March 24th by Le Grenier musique. “Vagues radio” is already one of the fan favourites from the album, thanks to its great grooves and excellent writing in chiac, the unique Acadian language of southeastern New Brunswick where Simon Daniel is originally from.
“Vagues radio” is a glimmer of hope amid the ambient anxiety caused by the multiple crises present in all our lives. As we are constantly tuned in to current events, it is increasingly difficult to unearth the truths and to arrive at a fair and balanced analysis of current issues, where multiple voices are raised in a kind of white noise. What can we do as individuals to help? How can we avoid this feeling of powerlessness? For Simon, making music is a way to get people on the same page, even if it’s just for a song. The chorus is an earworm invading the airwaves. Daniel wrote the lyrics, and the music and arrangement is a collaboration with the album’s producer, Mario Lepage (alias Ponteix). The musicians Simon B. Jutras (guitar), Vincent Yelle (bass), and Mario Lepage (synthesizers, beats) accompany Simon Daniel (voice, guitar) on lively and vibrant alternative pop melodies.
The video
The video for “Vagues radio” premieres on Simon Daniel’s YouTube channel on Friday, May 26th. Daniel directed and edited the video, which was inspired by the cinematographic language of old kung fu movies, an extravagant clip with a generous dose of self-mockery. Playing himself, he leads a mysterious mission aboard a Westfalia camper van, stopping on his way to assemble an unlikely team… that could save the world.
With the collaboration of the Atlas Films team, the video was shot partly in the studio using screens projecting images captured in southeastern New Brunswick. The illusion of a minibus driving down the road is another nod to the old cinema. The team also built several props, including a series of “transponders” made from electronic tubes, an old oscilloscope transformed into a radar, and objects made with a 3D printer. The clip features Mathieu Chouinard, Line Woods, and Xavier Richard. The photo direction, special effects and color grading were done by Evar Simon. Etienne Boivin participated as first assistant director, and Simon Doucet as stagehand.
“Sans titre (for now)”, Simon Daniel’s second album full of promise
Simon Daniel crosses the intersections of pop, electro, alternative and rock music to project his transcendent voice with the sounds of a timeless urban Acadie. On layers of analog synthesizers, his melodies carry self-analytical and pictorial lyrics that merge French, English and Chiac. Four years after his first album “Nightcrawler”, which earned him several awards including two ECMA nominations and a nomination for artist of the year at the Éloizes awards, Simon returns with “Sans titre (for now)”, a project produced in collaboration with Mario Lepage, the Saskatchewan-based multi-instrumentalist behind the band Ponteix. The album marks an evolution towards more direct and contemplative songs that, in a resolutely pop format, still leave a lot of room for sonic and textural experimentation.
