GREAT NEWS FOR OUR COMMUNITY
Since January, Council and I had housing and community growth as one of our high priorities. We believe that creating new opportunities for additional housing in our community not only fuels our population and tax base growth, but also supports our local businesses with workforce attraction and retention. I am pleased to announce that under a new funding program under the Government of New Brunswick Housing for All strategy, our community has been chosen as the first small community in New Brunswick to receive funding from the new program.
Over the past year, Destination Nackawic Economic Development Corporation (DNEDC) has continued to work on a housing development plan on a 47-acre parcel of municipally owned land in the ward of Nackawic. We would not be in this position now, if not for the foresight and work that the DNEDC Board had completed leading up to this point in time, including work that was started long before our larger community was established in January 2023.
With the financial support of the Government of New Brunswick, we have partnered with Housing Hub New Brunswick to begin development of the site (map below). Over the coming weeks and months, there will be pre-engineering work on the site to gather the geotechnical and topographical data needed to firm up final development plans. As such, you will soon notice equipment in and around the site preparing to conduct this important work.
Through our partnership with Housing Hub NB, and in alignment with the principles of the Housing for All strategy, the housing development will feature a range of different housing types, including affordable housing, multi-family dwellings, and market housing. As we work through the process, Housing Hub NB will be assisting us with design of the development layout and homes. We will be able to share more of these details as they become available.
