In an unexpectedly swift decision, the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board has approved most of N.B. Power’s application to raise rates above four per cent this year.

This decision includes approval of new fees on residential customers who do not accept the installation of a smart meter by September.

The new higher prices for electricity in New Brunswick could be in place as early as next week after N.B. Power recalculates the increase it is allowed based on changes in its original application that have been ordered by the board decision.
