Ken Reid grew up on a cash crop and cattle farm in southwestern Quebec near Montreal. He left at 18, served in the Canadian military, worked as a contractor at CN Rail, ran his own companies and later spent years with J.D. Irving Ltd.
Along the way he found himself back where he started.
Reid founded 5000 Farms, a non-profit farming organization, in 2015 while sitting on the board of Harvest House, which provides food and support services to people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. He said the idea grew out of what he was seeing on the ground.
