The Government of New Brunswick announced construction of a new addictions treatment centre for Bilijk First Nation that, according to the community’s chief, will address systemic issues.

“This project has become a critical part of our community’s vision to help foster and cultivate healing, growth and wellness,” Chief Justice Gruben said at the announcement in the community also known as Kingsclear First Nation.

According to the province, the community health clinic — the Bilijk Health Centre — is currently helping 75 clients with mental health and addiction challenges, and it needs more space to provide treatment.

“[The facility] will provide structural solutions to the structural problems that the Indian Act reservation system was designed to create for our people,” Gruben said.
