Moncton councillors have asked city staff to draft a bylaw regulating short-term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo.
The unanimous vote during a committee meeting Monday calls for the city to hire a consultant to prepare a bylaw and report back to council by July next year.
Councillors voiced concerns Monday about fire safety, loss of housing and impact on neighbourhoods from unregulated short-term rentals.
What the regulations would require are not yet known, though city staff referenced routine fire safety inspections and compatibility with the surrounding neighbourhood.
Coun. Kate Doyle moved the motion and spoke about her personal experience living beside an Airbnb.
“It is an absolute nightmare,” Doyle said, describing being assaulted by one guest.
