A Cap-Pelé man has been convicted of assaulting and threatening an N.B. Power contractor he suspected of installing a smart meter at his home.

A Moncton judge found Ronald Arsenault guilty of assault and uttering threats against Akeem Duncan.

Judge Luc Labonté said he was convinced the 54-year-old became aggressive and assaulted Duncan as the former N.B. Power contractor made his rounds in the Cap-Pelé area to switch electricity meters to smart meters.

At a trial lasting less than an hour last Friday, Duncan testified he had a list of homes getting new meters, and one of those was Arsenault’s, on Chemin Trois Ruisseaux in Cap-Pelé.

CBC News was not present at the trial but obtained recordings of the proceeding from provincial court.
