An independent police watchdog agency is investigating a fatal “police-involved” shooting that occurred in Neqotkuk First Nation, formerly known as Tobique, in northwestern New Brunswick, Sunday evening.
One man is dead, according to a news release issued by the Serious Incident Response Team, known as SIRT, around 10 p.m. AT.
Neqotkuk First Nation Chief Ross Perley and council issued a release on First Nation letterhead on social media shortly after 11 p.m. AT identifying the victim as Bronson Paul — “a son, father, brother, partner, nephew and so much more.”
“We understand that our community members are angry, confused, scared and shocked. We share that sentiment,” it said.
