New Brunswick’s public safety minister says there will be a “full review” of an escape from Shediac’s Southeast Regional Correctional Centre but refuses to release details in the meantime.

Inmate Todd John Lewis, who was being held at the jail while awaiting trial on weapons charges, escaped on Feb. 12 by jumping a fence in the jail yard, according to RCMP.

Police say he was caught by RCMP officers nearly six weeks later on Mar. 23 and now faces two new charges: escaping from lawful custody and breaching a probation order.

“I do understand that people are concerned, me too,” said Minister Robert Gauvin. “So we want to get to the bottom of this so that that’s why a thorough investigation is needed.”
