As we work towards an association for HSCs (Human Service Counsellors) in NB, the following story from CBC is worth examining to help remind us of the important social and cultural context for our occupation and the principles of practice as HSCs, and how our practice in its essence is meant to be supportive and enabling and developmental. Clearly none of us is perfect in adhering to such principles but what is important is the firm commitment to a certain ethical direction.
The CBC story is a person-centered story that embodies certain less tangible principles that I believe are symbolic of a fundamental change that has occurred, and which some of us have witnessed in our life time, in HSC self-understanding as well as in the larger society in which we work …
