About a year ago I was a struggling overweight Type II diabetic that was now insulin dependent because other medications stopped working and on the verge of kidney failure. When someone close to me gave me a suggestion. They asked if I had ever considered being a vegan or at least a vegetarian. Quite frankly I didn’t know what to think but I trusted their advice and went home to do some research. What I found was a little overwhelming and honestly made me think. If there is proof this helps people like me why the hell don’t doctors recommend it.
So after I convinced myself to try it, I set a date and stuck to it. I started out changing to being a vegetarian. It was an interesting experience within a couple of weeks I started to feel better. The biggest thing was dealing with the reaction from people having a hard time believing I was doing it. But I stuck with it and around the middle of December decided to take it even further and become vegan as of the first of the year.
Well it is now a year later since I first started thinking about this and I am still a vegan (and won’t go back). As for my diabetes I have been able to drastically reduce the amount of insulin I have to take. But the best news is that I have reversed the kidney damage. I don’t even have to see the kidney specialist anymore. I feel great, have more energy than I have had in years and the weight is starting to come off too. So now my fridge is full of tofu and veggies instead of junk food and I find myself preparing meals at home more that actually require cooking.
You may ask why am I sharing such a personal story? If even one person reads this and it inspires them to give it a try then it has been worth it. As for myself, my next goal is to continue getting healthy. I’m so tired of being sick and tired.
