The Holt Liberals are cutting in half the amount of time a committee of MLAs spends scrutinizing the spending of government departments, agencies and Crown corporations.
The legislature’s public accounts committee will only sit for two weeks in 2027 rather than the customary four, government House leader Marco LeBlanc confirmed Monday.
LeBlanc argues that the committee is so efficient that it doesn’t need to spend as much time scrutinizing the work of public bodies.
He said the committee has met for more hours than any other provincial or territorial public accounts committee in Canada.
“As such, there is little to no backlog of annual reports for the committee to consider and recent meetings regularly finished ahead of schedule,” he said in a statement to CBC News.
