The Municipality of Grand Lake announced on Sunday that Smith, a longtime councillor and a candidate in the May 11 municipal elections, had died.
The 77-year-old Smith was elected to village council in Minto in 2016, according to former Minto mayor Erica Barnett.
She said they were elected together in 2016 and in 2018, when she was elected mayor and Smith became deputy mayor.
