The Fredericton Police Force says it has seen a “concerning spike” in overdoses in the city this week.
A news release on Friday afternoon said the force has responded to 17 suspected overdose calls since Wednesday morning.
“Some incidents have involved multiple people experiencing suspected overdoses at the same time, as well as back-to-back calls,” the force said.
The release noted there is not enough information yet to link the increase in overdoses to a specific substance. It also said 17 was an approximate number and hasn’t yet been verified.
The force warned people not to use drugs alone, to call 911 for any suspected overdose, and to carry naloxone, a medication that can reverse overdoses.
A spokesperson for Medavie Health Services New Brunswick said in an email said calls for ambulances totalled 43 for suspected overdoses in Fredericton between Monday and 3 p.m.
