Fredericton police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a homeless encampment on the north side of the city.
Officers responded around 6 p.m. on Monday to a report of a sudden death and found the body of a man in a “temporary shelter structure,” police said.
“Foul play is not suspected at this time,” said an email statement from the police force. “An autopsy is being conducted and the file remains under investigation.”
Police would not provide the man’s name, age, the exact location of the encampment, or any other information.
Recently, the Human Development Council counted 353 homeless people in Fredericton. Meanwhile the number of shelter beds in the city has dropped from 33 last year to about 25 this winter.
