New Brunswick’s decision to launch a five-month review into whether to lift its moratorium on shale gas development has sparked concern among some First Nations leaders and grassroots organizations.

Ron Tremblay (Spasaqsit Possesom), grand chief of the Wolastoq Grand Council, said the timeline is insufficient for a decision that could have far-reaching effects.

“Five months is too short, it’s just like a blink,” said Tremblay.

Premier Susan Holt said in the province’s announcement Wednesday this review does not mean an immediate green light to shale gas development but the beginning of a five-month dialogue with partners and New Brunswickers to determine the path forward.
