With Shediac’s giant lobster as a backdrop, several concrete canoes raced on the Scoudouc River this weekend.

The teams participating in this year’s Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition were from 23 different universities, including schools in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Several engineering students spent almost a year achieving the perfect concrete mix and design for their boat. The canoes were put on display, presentations about the product were made, and race day is the ultimate test, said Mathieu Bordeleau, president of the race committee.
