Nestled within the heart of Hanwell, “Dawn Chorus” takes flight as an innovative creation that merges artistic expression with educational engagement. With meticulous attention to detail, Rooney has ingeniously crafted an art installation that allows students to experience birdwatching right within their learning space. As they gaze upon the 27 feet of wall space adorned with 32 beautifully rendered songbirds, students can utilize binoculars to marvel at each avian species perched at varying heights.

Rooney’s artistic journey spanned five months of dedicated research and painting, resulting in six stunning acrylic paintings on circular birch panels. Ranging from 2 to 5 feet in diameter, these masterpieces harmoniously blend vibrant dreamscapes with the realistic depictions of the local songbirds. The immersive experience is further enhanced by the playful incorporation of local trees and wildlife, such as foxes and coyotes, symbolizing the connection between imagination and the natural world.
Deliberately situated within a designated “chill-out zone” and a stimulating “think tank,” “Dawn Chorus” aims to foster mindfulness and inspire contemplation. The artwork’s therapeutic benefits extend beyond aesthetics, contributing to the well-being, happiness, concentration, and relaxation of students. By combatting Nature-deficit disorder and nurturing ecological awareness through art, Hanwell Park Academy School seeks to bridge the gap between modern society’s disconnect from nature and our innate connection with the environment.
“The policy’s main objective is to promote a sense of shared identity and pride of place among New Brunswickers, while also recognizing and supporting professional artists,” stated Tourism, Heritage, and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. In line with the New Brunswick Public Art Policy, the unveiling of “Dawn Chorus” marks one of four exceptional installations selected to enrich the lives of Hanwell Park Academy’s students, staff, and visitors.
Dawn Chorus will inspire generations of students to embrace the beauty of local songbirds and foster a deeper connection with the natural world.
