Moncton council approved using the former Moncton High School sports field as a temporary parking lot and staging area for a major federal construction project.
The 9-1 vote on Monday rezones land off Church Street to allow it to be used during construction of the Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre. The $600-million centre is under construction along Université Avenue.
Deputy Mayor Paulette Thériault said Monday that the project had to go forward, pointing to the scale of federal spending on the science centre.
The vote Monday followed a lengthy debate about how to handle traffic on Church Street entering or exiting the site.
